viva la chocolate!

i'm a huge fan of chocolate and i definitely have my favorites.
what sweeter gift to give to yourself or the loves in your life?

a short list of my favorite cacao pushers.

mast brothers

many locations where you can buy their delectable bars, but it's best to visit their
factory in wiliamsburg. open weekends from 12-8. i like the fleur de sel bar. their packaging is perfection. don't be afraid to tear the pretty paper.

jacques torres
66 water street
dumbo

ben and i love to pop into jacque's shop when we're in dumbo. so nice to walk around with a box of chocolates and hanging at the pier. take a jaunt across the brookln bridge to walk it all off. good times. i love this chocolate "spanker" for vday.

vosges haut chocolat
132 spring street
manhattan

when you see the purple box, your heart might explode. these are chocolates to thrill.
truly unique? the rosebud poudre encrusted dark cacao truffles made with rosé piper heidsieck. sick.

mariebelle

manhattan

for an entirely romantic treat, tuck into their broome street salon for an amazing demitasse of the best hot chocolate you will ever have. i love their spicy hot chocolate. such a nice winter treat...and aphrodisiac.

valentine's day: i vote to take the pressure off the boys

of course it's nice to be romanced, but why not buy yourself what you really want anyhow? as an experiment, i'm going to post a new vintage online find per day in february. today, i'm cruising ebay for vintage inspiration...very into vintage scarves today and leather/suede apparel. maybe i'll put together some entire looks from online sources.

i love this vintage pierre balmain scarf...would look great with everything. dreamy with a perfect khaki trench and cognac leather platform sandals.

with this vintage trench...or this one in leather (yum):

or this great navy band jacket as an alternative to the leather trench (but i would buy both for spring...happy valentine's day to me)

ah...and look at this great dress:

lust...these shoes are bananas and in a shade of green that is killing softly.

i love these vintage sandals with the dress, trench, and scarf. so perfect.

and this vintage woven leather and silver cuff is a must.

also this little floral bag is so chic

and i love, love, love the concept, colors, and exaggerated length of this mailbag

and yellow tights are on my wishlist

everyone should have a hobby

i always try to neatly break my eggshells in half...i like the way they nest together
and it's very satisfying when the shells are all nestled together like lovely thin porcelain cups.

ben: "why do you always nestle the eggshells together so neatly?"
me: "because they're so lovely and i like the sound they make when they touch. have you never heard the superstition about crushing eggshells?"
ben: "?"
me: "there's an old superstition that you should always crush your eggshells, lest witches should sail in them."
ben: "?"
me: "there's even a poem by elizabeth fleming from 1934 about witches sailing in eggshells and wreaking havoc for ancient mariners."
ben: "oh. wow. ok."
me: "well...everyone should have a hobby."

EGG-SHELLS
By Elizabeth Fleming

Oh, never leave your egg-shells unbroken in the cup;
Think of us poor sailor- men and always smash them up,
For witches come and find them and sail away to sea,
And make a lot of misery for mariners like me.

They take them to the sea-shore and set them on the tide-
A broom-stick for a paddle is all they have to guide-
And off they go to China or round the ports of Spain,
To try and keep our sailing ships from coming home again.

They call up all the tempests from Davy Jones's store,
And blow us into waters where we haven't been before;
And when the masts are falling in splinters on the wrecks,
The witches climb the rigging ropes and dance upon the decks.

So never leave your egg-shells unbroken in the cup;
Think of us poor sailor-men and always smash them up;
For witches come and find them and sail away to sea.
And make a lot of misery for mariners like me.

little creatures

researching jewelry artist, mary lee hu, i stumbled across john paul miller's work. he's most well known for his work in granulation technique and the fantastic small creatures he conjures. examples of his work are part of the permanent collection in the renwick gallery at the smithsonian...so very inspired by his his treatment of organic forms and texture.

pirate skull AWOL

The skull of 14th century pirate, Klaus Stortebeker has been stolen from
a Hamburg museum
. Found in 1867, the skull had been nailed to a stake on an island in the Elbe river for hundreds of years. Legend has it that when he was captured and beheaded in 1400, his body rose from the ground and ran past eleven of his men. His name translates to "empty the mug with one gulp". Seriously? Who would want to mess with this pirate, even if it is only his skull? If said skull is found, feel free to ship to our Brooklyn store.

for the DIY inclined

I stumbled across this great apparel and pattern design book at Open Air Modern in Greenpoint. Claudia Ein wrote this book in 1975. Everything about her approach to basic apparel design and patternmaking is simple and inspiring. I love that you can create a myriad of styles from her 5 basic sloper patterns. Great for the DIY curious. Buy it here.

dreaming in floral

I am entirely obsessed with floral prints right now. Seems like the perfect way to perk up a winter wardrobe and spring forward. a floral shirt with a matte peach lip and silvery smoked eyes feels modern and romantic at once. especially, i'm loving a floral shirt beneath a simple black dress so the print peeks out and is nearly covered. kinda 90's. kinda feels right.

Back in the saddle, again

My heart went out to Brittney during her time of "crisis"...it's understandable to break down a bit when your entire life is on display and every move is fare for the tabloids. The HH Franklin design:shop bathroom even has an art installation in her honor. Brit's back and looking A+ (big nod to joining the brunette club, B! Welcome!). Apparently she's a fan of Hayden-Harnett from waaaay back. She's rocking our Nico hobo in Iznik Yellow from Spring06. Niiiice choice. We still get requests for la Nico. Myself, I own three (i have a big archive, y'all)— chalk, iznik yellow, and luggage. Good news? We will have "Butter" as a new yellow for Spring 10 in some new spring10 styles. Also, luscious washed lamb will be back on the scene. Brit's spot-on with her color choice. So glad to see all is well, little mama.

"Claire's Knee". I love the colors, scenery, and awkwardness of this film by Eric Rohmer. Who wouldn't like to be at a lakehouse in the Alps with foxy French people?
For those who obsess over specific body parts, this film is a tribute to you.

A Gazillion Ways to Rock HH

I've had the good fortune to converse with Melody Chu, one of our Design Your Own Bag winners, through our development process. Melody had mentioned to me that she was rocking some Hayden-Harnett over the holiday season and how she found our collection to be "universally appealing". I'm always curious to see how people wear HH, as everyone really seems to create a very unique look with our pieces. Especially, I love seeing how people wear HH with pieces from other designers.

That's Melody at the far right in our Garçon turnlock trench with a delicious Balenciaga bag. Great choice!

Melody was kind enough to answer a few questions for me regarding her life, career, and love for Hayden-Harnett.

*TH) where do you live?
*MC) I live in Fremont, California, so in the “Bay Area” and about 40 minutes from San Francisco.
*TH) what do you do?
*MC) I work as a customer service lead for Gazillion Entertainment, a video game developer/start-up in San Mateo.
*TH) how long have you been a fan of HH?
*MC) I bought my first HH bag in June 2007; after seeing modeling photos of the Mercer triple compartment satchel, I knew I had to get one! I got the bag in the Ink color. It was a “first job” present to myself. I wore the bag my first day of work!
*TH) how many HH pieces do you own?
*MC) I think I know – 10 exactly. Two pairs of shoes (Mercury Wedges, Zelda boots), three bags (the Mercer 3C bag, Havana in ICP, the Target convertible tote), two articles of clothing (the Yoko dress and Garcon coat), and three accessories – the Vesuvius cuff and two keyfobs. Well, 11 pieces if you count the DYOB. (I grow collections slowly and “only” own a total of 10 bags at the moment…)

I also love this pic of Melody in our Yoko dress looking entirely comfy and stunning at once...not an easy fashion feat!

Thanks for the pics and the interview, Melody! Thanks also for being a fan of HH :)
