IRL: a not very serious at all weekly exploration of hayden-harnett style by very real people. Issue 6: spring 09 - 5/13/09 - Kate Blumm - height: 5'4 on a good day What do you do IRL? I work in communications at the extraordinary and beautiful Brooklyn Botanic Garden, doing media relations, photo shoot management and more. I also write about food for The Local, a New York Times blog devoted to Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, where I live with my beautiful husband Michael and our two misbehaving cats Verandah Place and Amos. This spring I've also been busy producing a short film, Domestic Shorthair Underground, which will hit the festival circuit later this year. And, in my spare time I'm a fervent collector of hats and fascinators- my grandmother was a hat model with a huge collection, so I blame my biological makeup for that particular obsession.

Why did you choose this look? I'm all about the new look silhouette of cinched waist and full skirt, so the dress instantly attracted my interest. And the print! It can be hard to do bright colors elegantly, but this painterly pattern knocked my socks off. The coat is the perfect three-season weight, and the dove grey can be worn with something vibrant like the dress, or a more subdued business-y outfit. I don't normally do spikes, but the colors of these cuffs were so whimsical, I couldn't resist the urge to stack. The Olive Ibiza Bag is my own! I bought it about a year and a half ago and am virtually never without it, and am always amazed at how I can always cram just one more thing in there. I usually bike to work, and because I'm short I knotted the long shoulder strap so it would sit properly when I wear my bag messenger style.
Anne Szustek - height: 5'8 - What do you do IRL? I'm the main business and financial writer for the NYC start-up news and info site www.findingdulcinea.com. Among my many daily tasks is penning Chin Up in the Downsizing, a column featuring positive business and financial news during the recession. I also manage to write about fashion from time to time, including this little bit about hayden-harnett, as well as about the Middle East region, in which I have an academic background. That in turn led me to do a couple of stints as a state department intern at the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and the U.S. Consulate general in Istanbul, Turkey. After getting my Masters, I returned to Istanbul where I got into financial journalism and got life experience on which I am basing my novel, which I work on in my free time. I also enjoy running, following fashion, going to concerts and volunteering for political causes, as well as at a homeless shelter on the upper east side.

Why did you choose this look? I thought the palette of peach, turqoise, and bluish greys works well for this spring/summer fashion season transition. Plus, not to be full of myself or anything, but I thought it would set off my red hair and green eyes.
